Following publication of the ONS revised back-series of population estimates for mid-2012 to mid-2020 in November 2024, an error with the output area data, and products derived from output area data was discovered. This error does not impact the accredited official statistics for LSOA, MSOA or Health geographies, nor OA data for 2021 and 2022.

The error was due to a faulty lookup which was used to split OA (2011) estimates to OA (2021) areas. The faulty lookup meant many newly created output areas from the 2021 census were allocated zero share of their 'parent' OA (2011) population. As part of the issue, population increases for new output areas between mid-2020 and mid-2021 were quite large.
