<p>A measure of the workforce used with claimant count data for calculating rates. The denominators are arrived at by adding the number of claimants resident in an area to the number of workforce jobs in that area. Workforce jobs are the sum of:</p> <ul> <li>employee jobs;</li> <li>self-employment jobs;</li> <li>Her Majesty's Forces;</li> <li>government-supported trainees.</li> </ul> <p>The largest component of the workforce is employee jobs which comes from a survey of employers. As a result the rate is a workplace-based measure, which expresses the demand for jobs in an area.</p> <p>Workplace denominators can be requested for all dates for which claimant count data are available but are only available for regions (government office and standard statistical) and countries.</p>

<p>Narrow workplace-based denominators are provided by ONS for historical continuity. In general, the standard workplace-based denominators should be used in preference to the narrow workplace.</p> <p>Narrow workplace denominators are arrived at by adding the number of claimants who are resident in each area to the number of employee jobs (i.e. a 'narrower' definition than the standard workplace-based measure).</p>

<p>A count of working age residents used with claimant count data to calculate proportions. Working age is defined as 16-64 for males and 16-59 for females. The working age population figures are derived from population estimates which are compatible with the 2001 Census.</p> <p>Residence-based denominators are available from 2001 onwards for local authorities, learning and skills councils, regions (government office and standard statistical) and countries.</p> <p>Although claimant count proportions are available for wards, travel-to-work areas and parliamentary constituencies, the propulation denominators for these areas cannot be downloaded separately.</p>
